REVIEW: Re-Gifters by Mike Carey, Sonny Liew, and Marc Hempel

Writer J.L. Bell is a true fan of fantasy, and not just L. Frank Baum. Though he’s the editor of Oziana, creative magazine of the
International Wizard of Oz Club, he’s also an Assistant Regional Advisor in
the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators–and he’s a blogger to boot, taking part in this year’s judging panel for Graphic Novels.

On his blog Oz and Ends, Bell provides a witty, honest, and often no-holds-barred perspective on fantasy literature for children. His site includes book reviews, comments on the publishing industry, and an eminently organized index of topics that includes links to individual series, authors, and books.

It also includes plenty of discussion of comics and graphic novels. In his recent review of Cybils’ Graphic Novel nominee Re-Gifters, he points out its unconventional premise–"Heroine Jen (Dixie) Dik Seong is a black belt with an unrequited crush on a boy in her dojo and a dose of attitude for everyone else"–and its intriguing, not-easily-classified art style as elements that encouraged him to pick up and read something that wouldn’t normally have appealed.
